X Layer Activates Jovian Upgrade: Ultra-Low Gas Fees Are Here
X Layer has completed the Jovian network upgrade, setting the minimum base fee to 0.02 Gwei. A standard ERC-20 transfer now costs just $0.0001 — making on-chain transactions virtually free.
What Is Jovian?
Jovian is the latest network upgrade from the OP Stack, introducing improvements across fee management, data availability control, and operator flexibility. As an OP Stack-based Layer 2, X Layer has adopted the Jovian upgrade to deliver a more cost-efficient and stable experience for developers and users.
What Changed for X Layer
Ultra-Low Transaction Fees
With Jovian, X Layer now sets a configurable minimum base fee at the protocol level. We have configured this to 0.02 Gwei, bringing transaction costs to near zero:
A standard ERC-20 token transfer costs approximately $0.0001
Complex DeFi interactions and contract calls are also significantly cheaper
Users no longer need to worry about unpredictable gas spikes
This makes X Layer one of the most cost-effective Layer 2 networks for everyday on-chain activity.
Configurable Minimum Base Fee
Prior to Jovian, base fees on OP Stack chains could drop extremely low during periods of low demand, triggering prolonged priority-fee auctions that degraded user experience. Jovian introduces a protocol-level minimum base fee parameter, configurable via the SystemConfig contract. The mechanism is straightforward: if the EIP-1559 computed base fee falls below the configured minimum, it is clamped to that floor.By setting the minimum base fee to 0.02 Gwei, X Layer achieves a balance between ultra-low costs and fee stability — preventing priority-fee auction cycles while keeping gas costs negligible for users.
DA Footprint Block Limit
Jovian introduces a Data Availability (DA) Footprint Block Limit that caps the estimated compressed transaction data per block. This mechanism:
Prevents DA spam that could congest the network
Ensures stable block production by limiting total DA usage per block to the gas limit
EVM Precompile Input Size Restrictions
Jovian introduces input size limits for several precompiles to improve predictability and security:
bn256Pairing: max 81,984 bytes (427 pairs)
BLS12-381 G1 MSM: max 288,960 bytes (1,806 pairs)
BLS12-381 G2 MSM: max 278,784 bytes (968 pairs)
BLS12-381 Pairing: max 156,672 bytes (408 pairs)
What This Means for Developers
Lower Barriers to Entry
With gas costs as low as $0.0001 per transfer, developers can build applications where transaction fees are no longer a concern for end users. This opens up use cases in micropayments, gaming, social applications, and high-frequency DeFi strategies.
Predictable Fee Environment
The minimum base fee mechanism eliminates the priority-fee auction cycles that previously caused unpredictable gas costs during low-activity periods. Developers can now model transaction costs with greater confidence.
No Action Required for Most dApps
The Jovian upgrade is backward-compatible at the smart contract level. Existing contracts deployed on X Layer continue to function without modification. Developers should be aware of the new precompile input size limits if their contracts make heavy use of pairing or MSM operations.
What This Means for Users
Near-zero transaction costs — an ERC-20 transfer for $0.0001 means on-chain activity is practically free
Faster transaction inclusion — reduced priority-fee auctions mean less waiting
Stable gas pricing — no more unexpected fee spikes during network congestion
Looking Ahead
The Jovian upgrade is a step forward in X Layer's commitment to providing the most cost-efficient and developer-friendly Layer 2 experience. We will continue to leverage OP Stack upgrades to optimize performance, reduce costs, and expand the capabilities of the network.Build with us on X Layer — where on-chain transactions cost next to nothing.
